Board Development Institute
The Board Development Institute (BDI) is designed to provide Catholic school leaders and active board members with the knowledge, skills, and strategies to manage high-functioning, governing boards. The six-month BDI is supported through a generous grant from the Healey Education Foundation.

Objectives
The Board Development Institute (BDI) facilitates the ongoing learning and development of participants through the following objectives:
- Complete a 6-month cohort-based, Board Leadership and Management Development with in-person and virtual learning components.
- Experience best-in-class instruction from the Roche Center for Catholic Education, Boston College, and leaders from Catholic schools and nonprofits.
- Develop relationships with school leaders and board members from across North America, emphasizing Catholic school mission and sustainability.聽
- Engage in cohort-level discussions facilitated by leadership experts. Cohorts: Secondary and K-12 Catholic Schools, Pre-K to Grade 8 Catholic Schools, Single or Cluster of Arch/diocese(s), Religious Sponsored Schools, Networked Schools, Schools with Advisory Boards.
- Enjoy a supportive Board Development Institute (BDI) alumni network of 200+ leaders, joined with the Roche Center Catholic school leadership community.聽
- Earn a Boston College Executive Micro-Credential upon completion of the program.
Blue Ribbon Boards are established when the Head of School and a simple majority (>50%) of board members have completed the Board Development Institute (BDI) with the Roche Center successfully obtaining a Micro-Credential. New board members are immediately invited to participate in the next BDI cohort.
Institute Information

- The BDI Application is open to current Catholic school board officers and members and senior school leadership. Presidents/principals/heads of schools and their board chairs are encouraged to participate as school teams.
- Individuals who successfully complete the Board Development Institute receive a micro-credential in Board Leadership & Management.聽
- Schools become a Blue Ribbon Board when the school鈥檚 leader and a majority of board members are trained.
2024-2025 Dates
Participation in the BDI includes:
- In-Person Program Kickoff at The Connors Center in Dover, MA |聽October 8, 2024, 2:00 pm - October 9, 3:00 pm ET
- Monthly Community Learning Zoom |聽First Tuesday of the month, November through March
- In-Person Program & Graduation at Boston College |聽March 25, 2025 2:00 pm - March 26, 3:00 pm ET
Costs
Subsidized & affordable:
Starting at $950 per participant
- $1,750 for School Leader and Board Chair Team
- $2,500 for three participants (one must be a board officer)
- $750 for each additional board member or senior school administrator
Board members are encouraged to personally assist with the cost of the program. A minimum $500 contribution for program registration is recommended.
